John Lloyd Cruz says that he is not out to compete with Vhong Navarro

John Lloyd Cruz and Toni Gonzaga finally met last week to shoot their first scenes together for their upcoming movie. Coincidentally, Toni is a perennial leading lady of Vhong Navarro, who is Lloydy’s good friend and fellow Kanto Boys member, along with Luis Manzano and Billy Crawford.

John Lloyd admitted that he is a big fan of the Toni-Vhong team-up and was even able to watch the onscreen couple’s last movie together, My Only U. “Napanood ko at kuhang-kuha ko ‘yung tema at gustong-gusto ko ‘yung pelikula. To tell you honestly, hindi dahil makakatrabaho ko si Toni at kaibigang malapit ko si Vhong [kaya ko nagustohan]. Kuhang-kuha ko ‘yung humor, kuhang-kuha ko ‘yung ginawa nilang page-experimento and instantly, naging fan ako ng pelikulang My Only U.”

With a new leading lady, John Lloyd was asked if he thinks his onscreen partnership with Toni can match or top the success of the Toni-Vhong team-up. John Lloyd replied that he has no plans of competing with anyone and besides that, there are still revisions being done on the script. “Marami pang kailangang gawin sa storya, sa script. So kung mahihigitan siya, I don’t know [at] kung anong sense niya mahihigitan. But mahirap sabihin kasi baka magkaiba ng tema or kung magkahawig man, I mean I can’t really say kasi that wouldn’t be the intention ‘yung mahigitan ‘yung pelikula. Kumbaga ang gusto lang namin makagawa kami ng pelikula na makakapag-entertain sana sa maraming audience.”

John Lloyd is thankful that he continues to get projects. “Ever since I started 13 years ago, tuloy-tuloy lang ang trabaho tapos mga three to four years ago, parang nag-peak pa siya,” he said. The actor went on to say that more than the projects, he finds fulfillment in what he is doing. “Iba ‘yung ginagawa mo ‘yung trabaho mo, iba rin ‘yung nagkakaroon ka ng fulfillment.”

He said that there is nothing more he could ask for at this point. “Higit pa sa sobra ang meron tayo,” he pointed out. Nevertheless, John Lloyd also explained that he is not resting on his laurels. The actor shared that he cannot be complacent just because his career is doing well. “Kasi ‘pag dun ka nagkulang, pwedeng mag-reflect ‘yun ng ‘di maganda sa trabaho mo, sa performances mo,” he said.
